The FTL Neutrino

Well I'm pretty sure this won't pan out, but it would appear that Neutrino have exceeded the speed of light.

Speed-of-light results under scrutiny at Cern

Perhaps this is just similar to what happens when nuclear fuel rods are cooling in water and the particles exceed the speed of light in the water (not in a vacuum), Cerenkov Radiation .     Something is effecting the environment of the neutrino or our measurement of them.

The decline and fall of technology news

I haven't posted again for quite a while, and I am beginning to realize why.  Technology news is getting boring for me.  I read alot of other blogs, websites and technology focused websites and I really don't find anything interesting enough to comment on anymore.  For example from todays tech news:

Dish Network expected to announce streaming service to rival Netflix today

My thoughts on this, without reading the article even are.... who cares?!    Is it worth my time to read about the dish network's sad attempt at this, which will probably fail in the long run.    Is Netflix really going anywhere despite a high overvalued stock price which is just now coming back to reality.  No.. .it's not worth reading.  Next...

Again, I find that I do not care about this.  Now that Apple is the biggest company in the world they are a target of everyone.  IP laws are all flawed anyway IMHO, that's why we have patent trolls... looks like Samsung is on that bus.  Next...

(skipping lots of articles about the latest cars, video games, ..etc..)  You see none of that really matters, it's all just the latest "Stuff" which wastes my time, my money and my life.

Ah.. this looks interesting..

Without even reading the article I assumed this is about how much you are irradiating your cranium with your cellphone, oops... apparently not.  They're more concerned with the radiation from natural disasters, understandably I guess, but I still like my first idea better.  iPhone Radiation Skin.... when you phone turns red.... you're dead.

Ok, so that was kind of fun!  Maybe I'll do this again tomorrow... or maybe not.  See you next time.

from September to January

This is the catchup post from September to present, opinions are as follows....

Facebook seems to be the biggest story these days, with a fictional $50 billion valuation, a movie (also fictional) and seemingly everyone putting their privacy at risk by routing their entire lives through a service controlled by one company.  Facebook is one of the biggest threats to the Internet as we know it.     I for one do not believe this can continue.  We need an facebook alternative, like Diaspora!    I think Diaspora is a good start, but what I'd really like to see is a completely serverless peer to peer social networking application that cannot be controlled by any entity in the way it is designed.

Diaspora Update: later the same day that I posted this, I have been informed that Diaspora is essentially serverless, I stand corrected, and I support it even more now :) Although it remains to be seen how well this actually works since it's not generally available yet.

Apparently nobody predicted how successful the Apple iPad would be, but I'm not surprised.  Yes, it's just a big iPod touch, but what's wrong with that?   The quality of the user interface and ease of use makes this tablet something anyone can use, and that is really all that matters to the majority of the population.    The small percentage of power users that want to fiddle with complicated superior tablets that are technically a hundred times better can go ahead and do that, but they shouldn't expect the average person to have any interest in that type of experience.    The iPad and it's successors will continue to dominate throughout 2011.

Does it matter that Steve Jobs has left and may not return to Apple?  Not right away...  even if his influence is the key factor to Apple's success, I think it would be many years before their current dominance could be threatened.  None the less, my greatest fear is that the immensely awesome Macbook line is somehow ruined by business decisions and I end up with a hybrid iPadBook.  Despite my high praises of the iPad as a tablet, I feel it in no way can replace an actual portable computer with keyboard and a fully capable operating system.    I'm using a Macbook Air 11" now and find it to be the best computer I've ever had, period.  (Sorry Amiga, you've finally lost top spot on my all time list)

In the mobile world, Windows 7 phones?  Meh... I have not even bothered to try one.  I just don't care and I long ago lost all interest in their "mobile" operating systems.    Again, the iPhone will be a major player... Android will continue to increase and alot of users will actually realize they are using an android phone now instead of the branded name of their carrier/manufacturer.    Nokia...  what are you doing!?    Research in Motion is desperately trying to seem "cool", but it's just not happening and their Playbook was not a good play at all.    The big battle will be iPhone vs Android for 2011.    In Canada, where I live..  more and more people will be abandoning their traditional land lines for a mobile only existence, augmented by Skype, Google Voice or something else that let's them make ultra-cheap long distance calls.    I recently determined that I'd save about $500/year by doing this myself, and most likely cut down on telemarketing calls, missed calls resulting in my having to listen to voicemails on an archaic 1970's voicemail system.  Biggest obstacle to cutting your landline involve safety... 911 calls, security systems use them, and if you local teleco doesn't offer DSL only service (mine does fortunately).

Startup investor/incubator AngelPad continues to do it's thing for 2011...  I sent them a couple good disruptive applications which were rejected of course.  Scanning the list of winners this round reveals nothing disruptive, just more clever ideas.    I guess the next facebook probably won't emerge through this method anyway, but it was worth a try.

I found my blog!

Did you know that 80% of blogs are abandoned in the first month?  While this blog has been around longer than that it certainly has lacked any recent content.  Here comes a summary of the last several months of neglect....

Hearts of Space

Have you ever remembered something from your childhood that seemed really good and you get all nostalgic, google it, only to find out it really wasn't all that good?   Well this time, the opposite is true.  What I remembered was not only good, it was amazing!

Back in the 80's sometime I was a young boy with a  transistor radio, late at night tuning in to all sorts of far away stations.   Where I lived up north you could only get 2 different stations during the day and otherwise it was all static.  At night this all changed due to atmospheric condition, and you could pickup stations from thousands of miles away.  One night I was "surfing" the FM dial and happened upon some sort of dreamy "Space Music" program.  The sound was like nothing I had ever heard before.  It was a different sort of music.... abstract, soothing and wonderful.   It stimulated my imagination and evoked emotions and mental imagery.    The closest to this I had encountered in other music would be Bach's organ music.  Each week the host of the show had a different selection of what he called space music.   I was able to find the program for many weeks but eventually for some reason it could not be found anymore.    As this was before the Internet there was no easy way for me to even find out where it had come from and where it had gone.  I gave up on it and moved on.

Not long ago, for some reason I thought of this space music again and tried googling it and stumbled upon the "Hearts of Space" website.  I was pleased to discover that this was the same program I had heard over 20 years ago!    Fortunately for me it was a Sunday and the website offered a free Sunday show and I was immediately listening to those beautiful sounds from so long ago.  It was like a void had been filled in my soul.   There was a space in my heart for this music and it is now filled again.  For a while I listened to their free Sunday show every week but this was not enough.  I recently subscribed to their radio channel which gives me a 24/7 stream of wonderful space music at home and at work using my laptop.     Thank you to Stephen Hill and his team for producing this amazing program and allowing me to enjoy it over the Internet.
